Cisco Approved Memory - Will This Void My Warranty?
One of the most common questions we receive at The Upgrade Group, Inc. regarding Cisco Approved memory is... "Is this 3rd party memory and will it void my Cisco SMARTnet service warranties?" The answer to both these questions is NO!
Cisco does not build memory. They contract with a handful of companies referred to as their "Approved Manufacturers" who engineer and supply them with their memory to be used in Cisco routers.
Memory typically has two classifications- Original and Third Party.
• Cisco "OEM" or "First Party" memory: Manufactured by Cisco's Original Equipment Manufacture(s) OEM's. This memory is sold to Cisco and is shipped in their routers. It has specifically been approved by Cisco to be used in their routers, passing highly stringent qualification processes for proper use within their systems.
• Cisco "Third Party" memory: Manufactured by various manufacturers that specialize in building compatible memory for Cisco and other major name brand systems. Cisco has not necessarily approved these products to be used in their routers and does not guarantee their compatibility. This is because the components used to build the memory may be different from what CiscoÕs OEMÕs use, however, the product is built 100% to Cisco specification and is guaranteed compatible by the manufacturer, but not by Cisco themselves.
Although The Upgrade Group, Inc. offers a variety of third party compatible solutions for Cisco routers, we also offer the Approved first party memory, and can supply this memory at a much reduced price, the only difference in the product being the packaging.
Cisco OEM Approved Memory is Not Third Party Memory
The difference between The Upgrade Group, Inc. Cisco Approved memory and third party suppliers is that we maintain direct relationships with the OEM build houses that engineer and supply Cisco with their router memory.
Cisco maintains an AVL (Approved Vendor List) for all of their memory products. Cisco approves only the memory products of these specific OEMs to be used in their routers. This is the memory that T.U.G. supplies to when selling Cisco OEM Approved memory. This insures that the product is built to the highest standards and qualifications of Cisco themselves.
